The European Parliament gave the green light in April to the sustainability due diligence directive, which regulates the obligations of companies in relation to actual and potential adverse impacts on human rights and the environment, the responsibility for non-compliance with these obligations and the requirement for companies to adopt and implement a transition plan to mitigate climate change (link).

The ESG principles examine companies according to criteria related to being pro-social, environmentally friendly and good corporate governance. Together, these characteristics can lead to sustainability. Therefore, ESG examines how a company's management and stakeholders make decisions; sustainability considers the impact of these decisions on the world.

Adopting ESG principles means that business strategy must focus on environmental, social and governance issues. This means taking measures to reduce pollution, CO2 emissions and waste. It also means having a diverse and inclusive workforce, from entry level right up to the board of directors. The funeral services sector is not only fundamental to society but also has a unique opportunity to lead the implementation of sustainable practices, reducing its environmental footprint and promoting social welfare.
